Current CST Time

In North America, CST means Central Time, and it is currently 03:54:55 CDT (UTC-5) on Saturday, September 19, 2026. But CST is the most overloaded abbreviation in timekeeping — it also stands for China Standard Time and Cuba Standard Time, up to fourteen hours away.

A quick rule for disambiguating. If the message mentions a US or Canadian city, a "CDT" variant, or an "8/7c" style broadcast time, it is North American Central. If it comes from a manufacturer, supplier or conference in Asia, it is almost certainly China Standard Time — and note that China never switches, so the gap to Chicago changes by an hour twice a year even though Beijing did nothing.

The clock below follows North American Central Time (America/Chicago).

Where North American Central Time Applies

Central Time is the second most populous North American zone after Eastern, covering roughly 130 million people across the middle of the United States, central Canada, Mexico and most of Central America. It stretches from the Canadian prairies to Guatemala — more than 4,000 kilometres north to south — and it is the zone with the most internal state splits, because the boundary runs straight through the Great Plains where few natural dividing lines exist.

In Canada: Manitoba and most of Saskatchewan, plus western Ontario and part of Nunavut.

Split between Central and a neighbour

State How the line falls
Texas Central almost everywhere — Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio. El Paso and Hudspeth County in the far west run on Mountain Time.
Florida The panhandle west of the Apalachicola River is Central; the rest of the state is Eastern.
Indiana Mostly Eastern, but twelve counties near Chicago and Evansville are Central.
Kansas & Nebraska Central in the populated east; the western counties are Mountain.
Kentucky & Tennessee Both split east–west. Nashville and Memphis are Central; Knoxville and Louisville are Eastern.
Michigan Eastern except four Upper Peninsula counties on the Wisconsin border, which are Central.
North & South Dakota Split roughly down the middle, with the western ranching counties on Mountain Time.

The Places on UTC-6 That Never Change Clocks

This is where Central Time scheduling actually goes wrong. Several places share CST's winter offset but do not observe daylight saving — so they line up with Chicago for four months of the year and sit an hour apart for the other eight, without ever touching their own clocks.

Place Relationship to US Central
Mexico City & most of Mexico UTC-6 every day since Mexico abolished daylight saving in October 2022. Matches CST in winter, one hour behind CDT in summer.
Saskatchewan, Canada Stays on CST year-round. Matches Central in winter and Mountain in summer — Regina and Denver share a clock from March to November.
Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua UTC-6 all year with no daylight saving, so the gap to Chicago opens and closes twice a year.

Mexico's 2022 change is still catching people out

Until 2022, Mexico City moved its clocks in near-lockstep with the United States and the gap to Chicago stayed at zero year-round. Since daylight saving was abolished that October, Mexico City is an hour behind Chicago every summer. Recurring calendar entries created before the change — and any software carrying a pre-2022 time-zone database — still get this wrong. Border municipalities like Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana were exempted and continue to follow US dates, so Mexico now contains both behaviours.

China Standard Time: One Clock for 5,000 Kilometres

China spans roughly five geographic time zones and runs all of them on a single clock: UTC+8. The unification dates to 1949, when the new government replaced the five zones then in use with one national standard set to Beijing's longitude. Nothing about it has changed since, and China has not observed daylight saving time since 1991.

The consequence is dramatic at the western edge. In Kashgar, Xinjiang — nearly 3,400 km west of Beijing — the sun can rise after 10:00 AM and set close to midnight on the official clock. Many residents there keep an informal local time two hours behind the national one for everyday purposes, so a stated time can mean either, and it is normal to ask which.

For anyone scheduling with China, the useful facts are short: the offset is UTC+8 every day of the year, it never shifts, and because the US does shift, the gap between Chicago and Shanghai is 14 hours in winter and 13 in summer. Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Western Australia all share UTC+8, which makes it one of the most populous offsets on Earth.

CST for Developers: The Ambiguity Is a Real Bug Class

There is no IANA zone called "CST"

The time-zone database has no plain CST identifier. It has CST6CDT — a US Central rule with no particular city — and it has America/Chicago, which is what you actually want. Anything that accepts a bare "CST" string is applying its own guess.

Java and .NET guess differently

Java's legacy three-letter parsing maps "CST" to US Central. Windows and .NET call UTC+8 "China Standard Time" and US Central "Central Standard Time" — two distinct names that both abbreviate to CST in ordinary prose. A string that round-trips on one stack can land eight hours off on another.

Fourteen hours is the failure mode

US Central and China Standard Time are 14 hours apart in winter and 13 in summer. A misparsed CST does not produce a subtly wrong time; it produces a meeting on the wrong day. That is at least easy to notice.

Use the IANA identifier end to end

America/Chicago, Asia/Shanghai, America/Havana. Store instants in UTC, attach the identifier when you need wall-clock time back, and never round-trip a time through a three-letter abbreviation.

Three-letter zone abbreviations are display strings, not identifiers. They are not unique, not standardised, and not stable across platforms. Store the instant — in UTC, or as a Unix timestamp — and carry the IANA identifier alongside it when wall-clock time matters.

CST FAQ

What does CST mean?

It depends on who is writing. CST most often means North American Central Standard Time (UTC-6), but it is also the standard abbreviation for China Standard Time (UTC+8) and for Cuba Standard Time (UTC-5). Those three are up to fourteen hours apart, so it is worth confirming which one a sender means before putting anything in a calendar.

Is it CST or CDT right now in the United States?

US Central is currently on CDT (UTC-5). Daylight saving is in force, so CDT is the correct abbreviation today; clocks return to CST on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

What is CST in UTC?

North American CST is UTC-6 and CDT is UTC-5. China Standard Time is UTC+8 with no seasonal change. Cuba Standard Time is UTC-5, moving to UTC-4 in summer.

How far behind Eastern Time is Central Time?

One hour, all year. Both zones change clocks on the same dates, so noon in New York is always 11:00 AM in Chicago. That fixed gap is why American television is advertised as "8/7c" — the same feed, one hour earlier on the Central clock.

Does Mexico still use CST?

Mexico City and most of the country sit on UTC-6 year-round, which is the same offset as CST, but Mexico abolished daylight saving in October 2022. So Mexico matches Chicago in winter and is an hour behind it in summer. Border municipalities such as Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez were exempted and still change clocks with the United States.

Why does China have only one time zone?

China spans about five geographic hours of longitude but has run on a single national clock, UTC+8, since 1949. The effect is most visible in the far west: in Kashgar, Xinjiang, the sun can rise after 10:00 AM on the official clock, and many residents keep an informal local time two hours behind it for daily life.

Which US states are on Central Time?

Ten states are entirely Central — Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Nine more are split between Central and a neighbouring zone, including Texas, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan and the Dakotas.

Why does Saskatchewan not change its clocks?

Saskatchewan has stayed on Central Standard Time year-round since the 1960s. Because it never springs forward, it matches the rest of Central Time in winter and matches Mountain Time in summer — Regina and Denver read the same clock from March to November.

When do Central Time clocks change?

In 2026, clocks spring forward on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:00 AM and fall back on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00 AM. Central changes one hour after the East Coast, because each US zone switches at 2:00 AM of its own local clock rather than at one shared instant.

What time zone should I use in code for CST?

Never the string "CST" — it is ambiguous and there is no such IANA zone. Use America/Chicago for US Central, Asia/Shanghai for China, and America/Havana for Cuba.
