On a Tyson chicken package the stamped 6099 is a 4-digit YJJJ code — the last digit of the year followed by the three-digit day of year. In a U.S. Department of Defense supply requisition it is a 7-digit YYYYDDD ordinal date. In an astronomy paper, JD 2461139.5 refers to the continuous count of days since 4713 BC January 1 at noon — a system defined by Joseph Scaliger in 1583 and still used by every observatory and spacecraft mission today.
