Current GMT Time

Greenwich Mean Time — UTC+0 — is currently 08:55:14 on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The United Kingdom, however, is not on GMT right now: London is on British Summer Time (UTC+1) and reads 09:55:14.

Careful with "GMT" today. The UK is on British Summer Time until Sunday, October 25, 2026, one hour ahead of GMT. If someone in London proposes "2pm GMT" right now, they almost certainly mean 2pm London time — which is 1pm GMT. When in doubt, ask for UTC or for a city name.

GMT Is Not the Same as UK Time

For roughly seven months of the year, "GMT" and "London time" are an hour apart — and almost everyone who writes "GMT" in the summer means the second one. Greenwich Mean Time is a fixed offset of UTC+0. The United Kingdom only uses it in winter; from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October it runs on British Summer Time, UTC+1.

This is the source of most GMT confusion, and it is worse than an ordinary time-zone mix-up because the word looks so authoritative. "3pm GMT" reads like a precise, international statement. In July, from a British sender, it usually is not.

Period UK clock is on Offset What "GMT" means to a Londoner
Late October to late March GMT UTC+0 The UK genuinely is on Greenwich Mean Time. "GMT" and "UK time" mean the same thing.
Late March to late October BSTnow UTC+1 British Summer Time. The UK is an hour ahead of GMT, so "GMT" and "UK time" are one hour apart.

GMT vs UTC: The Same Reading, Different Ideas

On a clock face, GMT and UTC are identical — both are offset zero. What separates them is where the time comes from.

GMT is astronomical. It is mean solar time on the Greenwich meridian: the average moment the Sun crosses that line, averaged because the real Sun runs early or late by up to about sixteen minutes over the year. Earth's rotation is the reference, and Earth's rotation is not perfectly regular.

UTC is atomic. It is derived from International Atomic Time, a weighted average of roughly 450 caesium and rubidium clocks in national laboratories worldwide, and it is kept within 0.9 seconds of Earth's actual rotation by the occasional insertion of a leap second. Twenty-seven have been added since 1972, the most recent at the end of 2016; the General Conference on Weights and Measures resolved in 2022 to stop adding them by 2035.

In practice: use UTC for anything technical — logs, APIs, flight plans, scientific records. Reserve GMT for British civil time in winter, and for the everyday sense in which people mean "the time in London, roughly." Our longer explainer covers the leap-second mechanics and the HTTP-header history in full: UTC vs GMT — what's the difference?

Who Is Actually on GMT All Year

Place Detail
Iceland On UTC+0 year-round since 1968, despite sitting far west of the meridian.
Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mali West African UTC+0 with no seasonal change.
Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia Also permanently UTC+0.
The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Togo No daylight saving at any point in the year.
São Tomé and Príncipe, Saint Helena Atlantic UTC+0 territories, unchanged year-round.

Iceland is the interesting case. Reykjavík sits around 22° west — geographically it belongs closer to UTC-1 — but the country fixed itself on UTC+0 in 1968 and abolished daylight saving at the same time, accepting permanently dark winter mornings in exchange for never changing a clock again. It is the closest thing Europe has to a controlled experiment in permanent standard time.

Four Places "GMT" Does Not Mean What It Looks Like

"GMT" in a Windows or Outlook time-zone list

Those entries — "(GMT+05:30) Chennai, Kolkata" and the like — use GMT purely as a label for an offset. They say nothing about Greenwich Mean Time and everything about UTC. Newer versions relabel them "(UTC+05:30)".

"GMT" in an HTTP header

The Date, Expires and Last-Modified headers end in "GMT" by specification, but RFC 9110 is explicit that the value is UTC. The word is a legacy of the original 1990s HTTP drafts and was never updated.

"GMT" meaning UK time in summer

The commonest error of all. From Sunday, March 29, 2026 to Sunday, October 25, 2026 the UK is on BST, one hour ahead of GMT. A call set for "2pm GMT" in July happens at 3pm in London.

"GMT" as a precise scientific standard

For technical work, GMT has been superseded. UTC is the atomic standard that timekeeping is actually built on; GMT survives as a civil time-zone name and a figure of speech.

How Greenwich Became the World's Zero

The railways forced the issue

Before the 1840s every British town kept its own solar time, and Bristol ran about ten minutes behind London. That was harmless until trains made it possible to outrun the discrepancy. The Great Western Railway adopted London time across its network in 1840, other companies followed, and "railway time" spread until Greenwich Mean Time became Britain's legal standard in 1880.

1884: a vote that ratified existing practice

At the International Meridian Conference in Washington, twenty-five nations chose Greenwich as the prime meridian. The argument was commercial rather than scientific: roughly two thirds of the world's shipping already navigated on Greenwich-based charts, and the alternative was asking the majority to redraw them. France abstained and continued to use the Paris meridian in official documents for decades afterwards.

The brass line is not quite zero

Visitors straddle the meridian strip at the Royal Observatory and photograph a GPS reading that stubbornly says about 0.0015° west. They are not wrong. The historic line marks the Airy Transit Circle, fixed by an instrument levelled against local gravity; modern positioning uses the IERS Reference Meridian, defined geocentrically from satellite data, which falls roughly 102 metres to the east. The line tourists queue for is a monument to the meridian, not the meridian itself.

Britain's experiments with its own clock

British Summer Time arrived in 1916 to save coal. During the Second World War the country went further, running British Double Summer Time — two hours ahead of GMT — through the summers. Between 1968 and 1971 Britain tried staying on UTC+1 all year; the experiment was abandoned after sustained complaints about pitch-dark winter mornings in Scotland and northern England, an argument that resurfaces every time permanent daylight saving is proposed.

GMT FAQ

What is the current GMT time?

Greenwich Mean Time — UTC+0 — is currently 08:55:14. Note that the United Kingdom is not on GMT right now: it is on British Summer Time (UTC+1), so London clocks read 09:55:14. The two line up again on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

Is GMT the same as UTC?

They show the same clock reading, but they are different kinds of thing. UTC is the modern time standard, computed from a worldwide network of atomic clocks. GMT is a historical term for mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian, and today survives mainly as the name of the UK’s winter time zone. For anything technical, say UTC.

Is London on GMT right now?

No. London is currently on British Summer Time, UTC+1, and returns to GMT on Sunday, October 25, 2026. This is the single most common GMT mistake — for about seven months a year, "GMT" and "London time" are an hour apart.

What does GMT stand for?

Greenwich Mean Time. "Mean" is the important word: it refers to mean solar time — the average length of a solar day — rather than apparent solar time, which varies through the year because Earth’s orbit is elliptical and its axis is tilted. The difference between the two can reach about 16 minutes.

Which countries are on GMT all year?

Iceland, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Togo, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Saint Helena all stay on UTC+0 with no daylight saving. The UK, Ireland and Portugal are on UTC+0 only in winter.

When does the UK change its clocks?

In 2026, British Summer Time began on Sunday, March 29, 2026 and ends on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The rule is the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October, and the change happens at 01:00 GMT — the same instant across the whole European Union, which is why the gap between London and Paris never breaks.

Why do HTTP headers say GMT?

Historical inertia. The HTTP date format was fixed in the early 1990s using the email conventions of the time, which used GMT. RFC 9110 keeps the literal string "GMT" for compatibility while stating plainly that the value is UTC. Parsers must accept it; nothing should read meaning into the word.

Is the Greenwich meridian still at zero longitude?

Not exactly. The brass line at the Royal Observatory marks the historic Airy Transit Circle, but modern satellite positioning uses the IERS Reference Meridian, which lies about 102 metres to the east. The difference comes from the shift to a geocentric reference frame and from deflection of the vertical at Greenwich. Stand on the tourist line with a GPS receiver and it will read a few thousandths of a degree west of zero.

Why was Greenwich chosen as the prime meridian?

At the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington, delegates adopted Greenwich largely because roughly two thirds of the world’s shipping already used charts based on it. France abstained and kept the Paris meridian in official use for decades. It was a ratification of existing practice rather than a geographic argument.

What time zone identifier should I use for GMT?

It depends which you mean. For UK civil time, including the BST switch, use Europe/London. For a fixed UTC+0 that never changes, use UTC or Etc/GMT. They agree in winter and are an hour apart in summer, so the choice matters.
