Current EST Time (Eastern Time)
The current time on the US East Coast is 04:53:09 on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Note the label: the zone is on EDT (UTC-4) right now, which means daylight saving time is in force and "EST" is technically the wrong abbreviation today.

EST or EDT? Almost Everyone Gets This Wrong
"EST" does not mean "the time in New York." It means one specific offset — UTC-5 — that the East Coast uses for only part of the year. For the rest of it, the same cities are on Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-4. The two are a full hour apart, and mixing them up is the single most common time-zone mistake in American business email.
The split is lopsided. In 2026, daylight time runs from Sunday, March 8, 2026 to Sunday, November 1, 2026 — 238 days on EDT against 127 days on EST. Daylight saving covers roughly 65% of the calendar, so if you write "EST" on a date picked at random, you are more likely to be wrong than right.
The fix is easy: write ET. Eastern Time is the umbrella term that means "whichever of EST or EDT is currently in force," and it is what the stock exchanges, the federal government, and every television network actually use. "3:00 PM ET" is unambiguous on any date. "3:00 PM EST" in July is a contradiction that your reader has to silently repair.

Phoenix is the outlier worth remembering: Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so it matches Denver in winter and Los Angeles in summer. Everywhere else on this list keeps a fixed distance from New York all year.
Where Eastern Time Is Observed
Eastern Time covers about half the US population — roughly 150 million people — plus most of eastern Canada and a stretch of the Caribbean. It is the most populous time zone in North America and the reason so much of American public life runs on an Eastern clock.
Entirely on Eastern Time
In Canada: most of Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa) and Quebec (Montreal, Quebec City), plus part of Nunavut.
Split between Eastern and Central
| State | How the line falls |
|---|---|
| Florida | Eastern, except the western panhandle past the Apalachicola River, which keeps Central time with Alabama. |
| Indiana | Eastern in most of the state; twelve counties near Chicago and Evansville run on Central so they match the cities they commute to. |
| Kentucky | Split roughly down the middle — Louisville and Lexington are Eastern, Bowling Green and Paducah are Central. |
| Michigan | Eastern statewide except four Upper Peninsula counties on the Wisconsin border. |
| Tennessee | Knoxville and Chattanooga are Eastern; Nashville and Memphis are Central. The line crosses the state, not the map legend. |
Time-zone boundaries follow commerce, not geography. Counties petition to move so their clocks match the city they trade with — which is why the line through Indiana and Kentucky zigzags rather than following a meridian.
Places on UTC-5 that are not on Eastern Time
| Place | Relationship to Eastern Time |
|---|---|
| Panama | UTC-5 every day of the year — matches EST in winter, one hour behind EDT in summer. |
| Jamaica & Cayman Islands | UTC-5 year-round, no daylight saving. |
| Cancún & Quintana Roo, Mexico | Moved to UTC-5 permanently in 2015 to align with US resort bookings. |
| Colombia, Peru, Ecuador (mainland) | UTC-5 all year, but their own zones — not "Eastern Time". |
| Bahamas, Haiti, Turks & Caicos | UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer, changing on the same dates as the US. |
This is the trap in scheduling calls with Latin America. Bogotá and New York share a clock in January and are an hour apart in July — not because Colombia changed anything, but because the US did.
When the Clocks Change in 2026
Spring forward
Sunday, March 8, 2026
At 2:00 AM EST, clocks jump to 3:00 AM EDT. The 2:00–2:59 AM hour does not exist that day, and the night is 23 hours long.
Fall back
Sunday, November 1, 2026
At 2:00 AM EDT, clocks return to 1:00 AM EST. The 1:00–1:59 AM hour happens twice, and the night is 25 hours long.
Why 2:00 AM?
The hour was chosen to disturb as little as possible: late enough that most people are asleep and bars have closed, early enough that it lands before the first Sunday church services and before the day's train schedules begin. It also keeps the change from pushing any date backwards across midnight, which would move a calendar day rather than just an hour.
Every US zone changes at 2:00 AM of its own clock
This is the detail that trips up international scheduling. The United States switches at 2:00 AM local time in each zone, so the East Coast changes an hour before the Midwest, which changes an hour before the West Coast. For three hours that morning, the usual gaps between US zones are briefly wrong. The European Union does the opposite — every member state switches at the same UTC instant, so the gaps within Europe never break. Our Central European Time page covers how that works.
The rule, and how it has moved
Since the Energy Policy Act of 2005 took effect in 2007, US daylight saving runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Before that it started in April. Systems with hardcoded pre-2007 rules — old embedded devices, stale time-zone databases, some legacy Java runtimes — are still wrong for several weeks each spring. This is exactly why time-zone rules belong in a maintained database rather than in your code.
Why So Much Runs on Eastern Time
| What | When | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| NYSE & Nasdaq regular session | 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET | Quoted in Eastern time worldwide, which is why London traders talk about a 2:30 PM open and Tokyo desks about a 10:30 PM one. |
| US network prime time | 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM CT | The "8/7c" on every promo: Eastern and Central get the same broadcast feed, Central just sees it an hour earlier on the clock. |
| Federal government & Congress | Business hours ET | Filing deadlines, press briefings, and agency cut-offs are almost always Eastern regardless of where the filer sits. |
| US market data & earnings calls | Before 9:30 AM or after 4:00 PM ET | Companies report outside the session; "after the bell" means after 4:00 PM Eastern. |
The "8/7c" convention
American television promos say "8/7c" because the Eastern and Central feeds are the same broadcast. A show that airs at 8:00 PM in New York reaches Chicago at the same instant, where the clock reads 7:00 PM. Mountain and Pacific viewers get a delayed feed instead, which is why those zones are left off the tag entirely.
Eastern Time for Developers
TZ="EST" TZ="America/New_York" In the IANA database, EST is a real zone — a fixed UTC-5 with no daylight saving at all. Set it and your server will be an hour off from New York for two thirds of the year.
Storing "2026-06-01 14:00 EST" Storing 2026-06-01T18:00:00Z June is EDT, so "14:00 EST" is a contradiction. Store the instant in UTC and attach the IANA zone if you need to re-render local wall time later.
Adding 5 hours to UTC Formatting with the zone A fixed ±5 works only in winter. Offsets are a property of an instant, not of a place — let the zone database resolve them.
Assuming every local time exists Handling the gap and the overlap On Sunday, March 8, 2026 the hour from 2:00 to 2:59 AM never happens, and on Sunday, November 1, 2026 the 1:00 AM hour happens twice. Both break naive parsing.
The rule that prevents all four: store the instant, render the zone. Keep timestamps in UTC — or as a Unix timestamp, which is UTC by definition — and apply America/New_York only when you display them. Offsets belong to moments, not to places.
Eastern Time FAQ
Is it EST or EDT right now?
Right now the US East Coast is on EDT (UTC-4). Daylight saving time is in force, so the correct abbreviation today is EDT, not EST. Clocks return to EST on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
What is the difference between EST, EDT, and ET?
EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC-5 and applies in winter. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is UTC-4 and applies in summer. ET (Eastern Time) is the umbrella term that covers whichever one is currently in force — which is why broadcasters, markets, and government notices say "ET" rather than picking a side.
Why do people say EST all year even when it is wrong?
Habit, mostly. "EST" became shorthand for the East Coast long before daylight saving covered most of the calendar, and calendar software often prints it regardless of season. Today Eastern Daylight Time covers about 65% of the year, so "EST" is the wrong label more often than the right one. If you mean the zone rather than the offset, write ET.
How many hours is EST behind UTC?
EST is exactly 5 hours behind UTC (UTC-5). EDT is 4 hours behind (UTC-4). To go the other way, add 5 hours to an EST reading to get UTC — 9:00 AM EST is 14:00 UTC.
What is the difference between EST and PST?
Three hours: the East Coast is always three hours ahead of the West Coast, because both zones shift for daylight saving on the same dates. 9:00 AM in New York is 6:00 AM in Los Angeles all year round.
Which states are on Eastern Time?
Seventeen states and the District of Columbia are entirely on Eastern Time, and five more are split between Eastern and Central: Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee. In Canada, most of Ontario and Quebec are Eastern too.
When do the clocks change on Eastern Time?
In 2026, clocks spring forward on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:00 AM (becoming 3:00 AM) and fall back on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00 AM (becoming 1:00 AM). The rule has been the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November since the Energy Policy Act of 2005 took effect in 2007.
Will the US stop changing clocks?
Not yet. The Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent nationwide, passed the Senate by unanimous consent in March 2022 but was never taken up by the House, and has been reintroduced without passing since. Under the Uniform Time Act of 1966, a state may opt out of daylight saving entirely — as Arizona and Hawaii do — but cannot adopt permanent daylight time without an act of Congress.
Is Eastern Time the same as New York time?
For practical purposes yes — New York is the reference city for the zone, and its IANA identifier America/New_York is what software uses for all of Eastern Time. Toronto, Miami, Atlanta, and Detroit all keep the same clock.
What time zone should I use in code for Eastern Time?
Use America/New_York. Do not use the bare EST identifier: in the IANA database that is a fixed UTC-5 zone that never observes daylight saving, so it silently drifts an hour away from the actual East Coast for most of the year.
